Getting to Know Your Spouse Better

Many couples fall into routines which leave them feeling disconnected. Sometimes time itself can simply wear on a marriage and leave people wondering if there is anything new.

Luckily there are great ways in getting to know your spouse better which will help ignite your marriage.

Communicate

Having conversations above and beyond the daily norm are key to a successful relationship with anyone. If you truly want to know how to get to know someone, you simply need to talk to them.

Set aside a specific time each day to converse with your spouse. Ask questions and be attentive. This will not only make your partner feel special but it will also allow the dialogue to flow freely.

Relate

If you and your spouse are communicating, you should work on showing empathy and relating to what they have to say. Sometimes getting to know them moves beyond the words they say into what they feel and you will need to step into their shoes in order to do this.

What are they feeling? Why are they feeling that way? Knowing your partners emotional triggers, responses and values will help you get to know them better.

Explore

One great method in getting to know your spouse better is to explore each other and the world around you. Determine your spouse’s interests and try and experience those interests together. This will help you not only know about what they like but actually learn to enjoy the things they like, or at least make an effort.

You will both feel a strengthened bond each time you explore different paths and interests together. Remember, just because you are married doesn’t mean you have the same desires, interests or goals. You will need to share each others passions in order to connect to one another and take part in each others lives.

Observe

Take a close look at your spouse. Start to notice the little details. Watch how they handle things, what they like to do, what their routine is if you haven’t been watching. By paying attention, you will start to see small things which you never noticed before.

Just because you have been married a long time doesn’t mean you know everything there is to know about each other. People change and so do their habits and tastes. Have a keen sense of observation to begin to inform you of who your spouse is as a person.

Witness them and experience their actions with them. You will find they will enjoy your attentiveness and ability to sincerely care about what they do.

Time

It is important in any relationship to spend quality time together. This does not mean quantity time but quality. You should set aside special times to enjoy each others company without the distractions of work, children, family or home life.

Making time for one another simply opens the channels for connection, conversation and closeness. If you incorporate this into your routine you will begin to learn more about each other.

Getting to know your spouse better involves a commitment. You cannot simply want to do this but you have to actually move to gain closeness. Having a desire to know who the person you are spending your life with is important and realizing people change and grow. Your greatest gift to your marriage is growing together in this way.
